Decision on Proposed “South Satellite” Hospice from Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce

As was announced on April 22, 2021, the Board of Directors at Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce (RHGB) made the difficult decision to pause the development of the proposed satellite hospice project in the Municipality of Brockton for up to 12 months.

After much consideration over those 12 months, including discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Canada Revenue Agency, RHGB has decided to not proceed with the proposed south satellite project.

Bill Pearson, Board Chair shared, “this was a difficult decision. Covid-19 created many obstacles, and the focus of RHGB over the last two years has been to keep our residents and their families, and our staff and volunteers at Chapman House as safe as possible. Anyone involved in or touched by hospice, no matter where you reside wants to see more hospice beds available to everyone who needs them. But we must focus on the sustainability and needs of our current hospice, Chapman House.”

According to CRA rules, a transfer of the donations made for the proposed south satellite project could be possible to another registered charity in good standing, if another project is in line with the original plans and honours the intent of the donors’ gifts. All private donations to the project thus far continue to be held in a segregated account, as per CRA regulations. RHGB is also awaiting direction from the Ministry of Health on the balance of the $180,000 seed funds received for this project.

Should a transfer option be taken by RHGB, donors will be notified via advertisements in local Grey and Bruce newspapers, as well as on the RHGB social media and website. Again, this transfer can only occur once the Ministry of Health rules on the seed money provided, and a qualified donee with a mandate of the South Build becomes available.

Executive Director of RHGB, Janet Fairbridge added, “since April 2021, over 25% of our residents at Chapman House were from Durham, Walkerton, Hanover, and surrounding area. We continue to ensure Chapman House is accessible to all in our community who need the highest quality palliative and end-of- life care available, at no cost to the resident or their family.”

Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce operates Chapman House, an eight-bed hospice in Owen Sound. Our mission is to provide comprehensive, compassionate care to all in our community during their journey with a life-limiting illness. At RHGB we are a community supporting community to live well with dying.
